Intuition and your job hunt -

Intuition and your job hunt - Intuition is the apparent ability to acquire knowledge without inference or the use of reason.[1] “The word ‘intuition’ comes from the Latin word intueri, which is often roughly translated as meaning ‘to look inside’ or ‘to contemplate’.[2] Intuition provides us with beliefs that we cannot necessarily justify. For this reason, it has been the subject of study in psychology, as well as a topic of interest in the supernatural. The right brain is popularly associated with intuitive processes such as aesthetic abilities.[3][4][5] Some scientists have contended that intuition is associated with innovation in scientific discovery.[6] Wikipedia Ive been thinking a lot about intuition and the job hunt. A lot of people who contact me have been looking for a job for a long time before they seek help. They realize that something isnt working and hope that getting help will help! But, why does it take so long? Why doesnt intuition kick in sooner? Which begs the question: Is intuition a skill we acquire or a talent we refine? The question, posed on LinkedIn and responded to by many people, is probably key. Clearly, some people have a stronger sense of intuition than others about their job hunts and everything else! So, I did a Google search for intuition in the job hunt. Not surprisingly, the first result was written by Kathy Hansen from Quint Careers, a giant in online career search resources. Kathy shares tips to sharpen your intuition and use it for making career choices.(Bold from Kathy, commentary is my own.) Accept your gut feelings. Do you remember someone once telling you to go with your first choice on a standardized test? While your first choice is not necessarily the best one for all of lifes concerns, it is important to recognize that you have a gut instinct. Think about it and use it when you are navigating your job hunt.. Know yourself. Think about it. Who knows you better than you do? Take advantage of what you know and let it guide you. Journal your thoughts about career choices. This is a useful way to track information you otherwise might ignore. Seek a calm, quiet place to ruminate on your intuitive thoughts. Kathy says, Its OK to wait for the insight you need to make a choice. I agree totally rushing to judge and acting impulsively are unlikely to help you with your job hunt. (Note the difference between impulsivity and intuition, per wikipedia: Impulsivity (or impulsiveness) is a type of human behavior characterized by the inclination of an individual to act on impulse rather than thought.[1] Although part of the normal behavior, impulsivity also plays a role in many mental illnesses. Take baby steps. You probably want to rush. Getting a job is important. Going slowly is okay. Its OK to use both intuition and rational, analytical thinking to make career choices, especially if you are not highly intuitive. Kathy suggests, Use reason to test your hunches. Once you think youve made an intuitive choice, ask yourself the logical questions that draw on your powers of reason. You can also visualize possible outcomes of your decision. Be positive and assume you have the resources to make a good choice. You cant really underestimate the importance of having a positive attitude. Ask the right questions. What are the right questions? Id suggest What brought me to this point, and what, if anything, do I want/need to change? Also What steps can I take to bring me closer to my goal? I can help with every part of your job hunt! Real-Life Resume Mistakes to Avoid -

Real-Life Resume Mistakes to Avoid -One of the advantages of hiring a professional resume writer is simply a matter of perspective. After reviewing numerous resumes over the years and working in HR we have a different sense of what works and what doesnt. Here are some issues Ive encountered in reviewing real-life resumes lately. Hopefully you can learn from unterstellung mistakesPresent your information succinctly Many of the ineffective resumes I see are four or five pages long. Unless youre in a profession like academia that requires a bona fide CV, the chances of a hiring manager reading all four pages of your resume are really close to zero. If you cant fit all of your past experience onto two pages, start examining your experience critically. Is your entry-level job from 25 years ago really relevant at this point?Dont repeat job descriptionsI recently saw a resume from a candidate who had held numerous stttes of a similar nature. Rather than explaining what made each position un ique or interesting, he literally repeated the exact same job description six times in the same resume. Although the candidates experience showed that he was not a lazy individual, his resume gave the impression that he couldnt be bothered to write a unique summary of his accomplishments at each of his positions.Use formatting correctlyUsing formatting such as bullets and section dividers on your resume looks greatas long as you actually know how to do it. If youre unsure of how to include these elements, read up in the help section of Word, check out a book like Microsoft Word for Dummies, or ask a friend to help you. Using these elements in a haphazard way can have the unwanted effect of making your computer skills look poor, when in reality maybe creating bulleted sections just isnt be your forte. The hiring industry has changed dramatically in just the last five to 10 years. We strongly encourage you to have several other people review your resume before you begin submitting it.R esearch shows that job seekers who use a professionally-written resume are 77% more likely to get interviews over those who dont. Thats a competitive advantage you cant walk away from. Great Resumes Fast guarantees your job search success visit our Web site to find out how or call 1.800.991.5187.

Who Does What How My Wife And I Have Handled Dividing Housework Over 3 Decades

Who Does What How My Wife And I Have Handled Dividing Housework Over 3 Decades For most of human history, the who does what of housework was pretty clearly spelled out, with gender determining each lebensgefhrtes specific role and contributions. Thankfully, thats (mostly) no longer the world we live in, but theres still no rule book for helping partners figure out how to divvy up household chores the physical, mental, andemotional ones in a way thats fair and equitable. So, what does the teilen of household chores for modern couples look like, really? In FGBs Who Does What series, we asked couples to complete an exercise in order to share with us the amount and nature of housework they actually do, and how they decided to divvy it all up.--NameJoe M.Location TennesseeRelationship status MarriedWhat type of home (e.g, condo, house) do you have? HouseDo you have any kids or pets?2 grown kids, one dogHow long have you and yur partner been together? 35 years (including dating)How long ha ve you been living together? 30 yearsWhat do you and your partner do professionally? Were both in sales--What chores do you do daily, and how did you and your partner decide youd be the one to do them? Please describe.Approximately 20 years ago, my wife left the workforce to focus on raising our two young girls. Prior to that, we both worked in similar careers and essentially split the duties. During her eight-year hiatus, I took on a promotion with some travel. At that point, my wife took over the monthly bills, and of course most of the care for our girls. A significant element that overlaps finances and time is healthcare. The doctor appointments and subsequent insurance filings are a major time commitment. After my wife returned to the workforce, she essentially kept the finance responsibility. It had been eight years since I had done it, and she is very detailed in that. In addition, she became a very accomplished chef during those eight years. Thus, in order to maintain balance , I have become the sole cleaner of the dishes/kitchen and do all the laundry. On a daily basis, this typically includes clearing the dishes off the table prepping dishes, pots, and pans for dishwasher loading and unloading and cleaning all kitchen surfaces, including floors as necessary. Laundry includes gathering from all bedrooms and bathrooms, washing as labels describe, and typically soaking for a few hours. Drying includes fluff and fold, separating, and hanging as needed. Any items that need taken to the dry cleaners (save for a few that are so detailed only my wife can tell the cleaner what to do), I will also take. At home, Im doing an average of one load and unload/fold per day.I also take out all trash, which includes going around the house to bedrooms and bathrooms. We have house cleaners that come every other week. In between, I will do the floors as necessary. I also maintain the air conditioner filters, lawn, and shrubs. My wife is great at planting so she does that, and she spreads a ton of mulch, too. Living in the south, when hot dry spells come I am the one that waters everything. How about your partner? What chores do they do daily, and how did they and/or you decide theyd do them?Daily, my wife handles the finances, including medical insurance filings. Our kids are grown, but until their 26th birthdays, all healthcare is through our insurance. Most of this is done online. The monthly bills are once a month, but there is much mora over the course of the month. Our eldest is on her own in all things except healthcare, but soon will be on her own there, too. Our younger daughter is still involved with higher education, thus finances are more involved. In this equation, my wife coordinates her medical appointments and remains involved in her daily finances. I in turn take control of her car/transportation and typically arrange our outings. Is the way you and your partner divide tasks similar to the household you grew up in? Why or why not?I grew up in the traditional father works, mom stays at home dynamic. There were five of us kids. I do recall my mom and dad doing the bills together. As I had two sisters and two brothers (one brother with Down Syndrome), much of the chores were divided along traditional gender lines. I do not recall doing any dishes. I also do not recall my sisters doing any cleaning or laundry. My brother and I covered trash and the yard, and Im sure my sisters helped mom.As my own marriage and family situation is much different than the one I grew up in, the roles and responsibilities are much different.Whats something you and your partner could improve on when divvying up and completing household tasks? Whats something you feel youre doing well?I dont think either of us would change a thing. Its a fair balance and plays to strengths and abilities.Lightning Round1. Who makes the bed? Most days- neither. Whats the point? Were not showing our house everyday and prefer just the sheet, so its always ready .2. When you go out to eat, who picks the restaurant and/or makes the reservation?Wife is a little more persnickety, so I let her pick. While she is getting ready I usually make the reservation.3. Who makes doctors appointments? Dentist appointments?Wife.4. Who picks up the dry cleaning?Me.5. Who keeps track of friends and family members birthdays?Seriously? They wouldnt know we existed without my wife.6. Who pays bills? (Or if you divvy this up, who pays which bills?)Wife.7. When something in the house/apartment is broken, who makes sure it gets fixed?Mixed. Wife is handy, does little stuff. I typically arrange and meet repair folks.8. Who makes sure the tags on your cars are up-to-date?Equally divided.9. Who vacuums?I do.10. Who was the brde person to dust something?Neither.11. Who was the brde person to clean your toilet?Neither of us. But if its broken, wife can usually fix. If not, I arrange to meet plumbers12. Who buys groceries?Wife mostly. Before she left the workforce with eight-year hiatus, I was the one who did that. Then she took over. When returned, she has continued much of that, as her expert cooking requires her food shopping. I continue to go approximately every other weekend or as needed.13. Who brings in the mail?I do.14. Who irons?Neither much, but Im the only one that has touched that thing in 25 years.15. Who was the last person to clean out the fridge/pantry of expired items?Wife.16. Youve been invited to a wedding. Who RSVPs?Seriously, what wedding?17. When planning a trip, who books the flights? The hotels?I am the master of all of that, and the family usually says its a great trip.18. Who planned what you did last Friday night? We only do things like that because of my planning.19. Who planned your last date night?I did.20. You need a gift for a friends housewarming party. Who buys it?Seriously, what party?21. Who goes to parent-teacher conferences? We both go. Probably wife has been to more, but I always tried.22. When you need a babys itter, who is the one to book and communicate with them?Evenly divided.23. Your child(ren) has a half-day at school. Who handles this, and how?During eight-year hiatus, mostly wife. Other than that, even.24. Who takes your child(ren) to their extracurricular activities? (If you divvy this up, who goes to what activity?)Even. Anything important, we both go for sure.25. Who planned the last birthday party for a child? What child? Now thats a joke, but their party is all wife.26. Who took your child(ren) to get a vaccination last? Most likely wife, although Ive done that, too.27. Your child acted out. Who will discipline them, generally?Even. They were the subject of two monsters.28. Your child needs a haircut. Who notices this, and who makes the appointment? Who takes them to the appointment?Theyre girls, do you want me giving them a buzz cut?29. Your child is about to outgrow their shoes. Who notices this, and who takes them to the shoe store?StrideRite made bank off them wife. When o lder, I got involved some.30. The last time you got a call from the school nurse that your child was sick, what did you and your partner do?Depending on who was available, although we employed the Big 3. Dont try that if you dont have a fever, arent bleeding, and/or arent vomiting31. During weekends and vacations, who considers the childrens needs for entertainment, meals and their schedule (in general)?Even.--Interested in participating in FGBs Who Does What series? Video Interviewing Keeping it Legal - Spark Hire

Video Interviewing Keeping it Legal - Spark HireWith more and more businesses utilizing video bewerbungsinterviews, you may be considering implementing this technology into your startups existing interview process. One of the questions that many small business owners have about video interviews deals with how to stay within HR guidelines and keep things legal. While video interviewing can seem like a huge difference from the standard resume screening, phone screening, and in-person interviewing, there is no difference when it comes to HR requirements. The main difference in the two methods is that video interviewing allows you to actually see the candidate earlier on in the process, or see a remote candidate in their home setting. In any instance, it is important that you remember what to do in order to ensure your interview goes smoothly and stays within legal guidelines.Ask the right questionsConducting a video interview, whether it is a one-way or live interview, should be very simi lar to a phone interview or an in-person interview. Yes, you will be able to visibly see the candidate sometimes earlier than normal and sometimes in their home setting, but you must still approach the interview in the same mindset as if you were on the phone with the candidate or interviewing the candidate in your office. You still need to stick to questions that deal with the candidates ability to do the job and stay away from questions regarding their personal beliefs or life.Treat each candidate equallyAbove all, the fruchtwein important thing to remember when implementing video interviews into your consideration process is that you must treat each candidate equally. This is no different than in any other situation when you are interviewing someone for a position. You must concentrate on the candidates skill, experience, and ability to do the job required. Age, race, or any other differentiating feature should not be a limiting factor in your interview process.Keep this in mind, especially when interviewing candidates through live videos. For example, if you notice through the video that the candidate has a family photo in the background, it is not okay for you to ask questions about their family. Questions about children, marriage partner, or marriage in general should be avoided. In addition, if you notice that the candidate seems to have a little gray in their hair, it is not appropriate to ask questions regarding age. In fact, just as with any interviewing situation, it is not appropriate to disqualify a candidate due to age.Implementing video interviews into your interviewing process can be a bit scary at first, but as long as you remember all of the basic rules of interviewing, you will find that video interviews are a huge timesaver to your interview process.Have you considered implementing video interviews into your current interviewing process? If so, what have been your concerns? We would love to hear from you please leave your comments below.Imag e Wavebreak Media Ltd/BigStock.com

5 Tips to Increase Your Productivity in the Workplace

5 Tips to Increase Your Productivity in the Workplace5 Tips to Increase Your Productivity in the WorkplaceAre you interested in more ways to increase your productivity at work? In the first parte of the interview with Jason Womack, executive coach and author of the book, Your Best Just Got Better Work Smarter, Think Bigger, Make More (Wiley),he offered eight tips to increase your work performance. Interview With Jason Womack About How to Improve Your Productivity In this continuation of that interview, Jason provides additional insights into how to increase your productivity at work. Susan Heathfield In a workplace environment, what are the three-five most performance inhibiting factors? Jason Womack I call them the sins of an unproductive day. Here are five sins. 1. Lie. Okay, this is step one Tell the truth. fruchtwein people say yes too often, and they say yes to things that arent exactly on course for where they are going, or whats important to them. Of course, its notlage al ways apparent on the front side. But over time, and with practice, you can begin to ask was that worth it? to whatever it was that you just did, where you went, who you talked to, the meeting you attended, the business trip you went on, the class you attended - the list goes on.When people lie and say they can (or cant) do something when they intuitively know they shouldnt (or should) do it, they compromise their focus, integrity, and power. Stop it. Get focused on where youre going. Up-level your Social Network (more on that later) and move in a direction that is on course for your talents, interests, and strengths. 2. Keep working after youre done. Call whats done- done. You probably have a project or task that youre done working on, but you havent marked it as complete because you think youll have more time to work on it later. You wont.Out of the 20, 40, 100 things that youre managing right now (that is, the events, projects, and deliverables youre responsible for over the next 1 -6 months), there might be 10 percent that youre actually not going to do anything more about or on. Good.Tell someone, anyone, and if you need to, pass on the as-much-as-youre-gonna-do task to someone who wants to do more. Otherwise move on. 3. Wishing things were different. At the water cooler. In the line at coffee. On the subway. Over dinner. These are the places where people talking about things theyre not willing to do anything about.Wishing (or worse, complaining) that things were different is perhaps the greatest sin of the worker, manager, entrepreneur or senior executive. The Pareto Principle exists to remind us that (approximately) 80 percent of our results come from 20 percent of our assets.Study the 20 percent and identify what you could address that would have the biggest impact on your productivity and performance. Ill share some ideas below if you want a place to start, focus on the 2 out of 10 people in your social network (not your social media network, thats som ething different) who are moving forward and willing to mind map strategies for success with you. That 20 percent focus, may just change 80 percent of how things are. Thats how you make things different. 4. Hope to remember. Ok, this is the starting point for inefficiency, ineffectiveness and under-performing. I frequently ask people, When you have an idea here for something to do there, how do you get that into your ordnungsprinzip? When someone says, Oh, I just remember to do it, I worry. No, I dont think people cant remember, I worry that while they are busy remembering one thing through the day, they may not have the opening to notice something else that passes their periphery. You see, if youre so full of remembering what you need to do later, you wont want to take in/on anything new. No new ideas, no new reading, no new conversations, no new media, no new meetings. But, in the new is where you see the difference. And, when you start doing things differently- or, as Steve Jobs sa id, think different- the opening occurs. We have the opportunity to engage at another, higher, level. 5. Thinking you should already know what to do. In a weird way, the educational system that most of you experienced is actually setting employees up for failure during your first few years on the job. Students spend years working alone, doing homework at home, taking tests on their own, sitting quietly in a classroom as teachers lecture about the topic of study. Then, they enter the workforce. Immediately, collaboration is king. I believe in the power of thinking- yes, we need to be able to do deep, integrative, developmental thinking on our own- and, I know that people move further and faster when they work together. The moment I get the intuitive thought that I should know better or I should know how to do something already, thats my cue to raise my hand and ask for help (or, send a tweet or status update, asking for help). Heathfield In your book, you present a number of framework s for how an individual can review the week, the month, and the year to improve productivity and performance. You are suggesting that a regular pattern for assessing productivity is important to establish. Can you tell us more about how this is helpful and what you recommend? Womack A weekly debrief is just a good all-around idea. Thursdays, mid-afternoon, look back on the week and ask yourself How did I do? What did I do? Where did I do it? Who did I do it with? The most important part of this activity is not just that you are doing it. The most important part is what you do when a thought about the past triggers a thought about what should happen.- what you should do, where you should go, who you need to meet with, and so forth- in the future. In the Stanford commencement speech by Steve Jobs that regained popularity just after his death, Steve said something that Ive been promoting for years In hindsight, we can connect dots. If our work, our world, our lives are always spent sim ply trying to get through the day, and into the next week, the next meeting, the next event, we lose the perspective that the review gives us. Look back, check it out, learn and use those experiences to build something that naturally comes next. You can use these ideas for increasing productivity to help you increase your focus and identify whats really important to accomplish each day, week, month. Just thinking about your everyday actions will bring forth ideas that could change your world- for the better.
